WHO Global Diabetes Compact launches 14 April

The Foundation of European Nurses in Diabetes (FEND) celebrates the discovery of insulin, the most precious gift of life, for people living with diabetes worldwide. Equity of access to insulin for all in need should be the objective of national governments and diabetes service providers. Approximately 6% of the world population live with diabetes. 

FEND welcomes the objectives of the WHO Global Diabetes Compact launched on 14 April 2021 at the Global Diabetes Summit co-hosted by the World Health Organization and the Government of Canada, with the support of the University of Toronto.

FEND recommends and campaigns that providers of diabetes services should ensure that all people with diabetes have access to a named diabetes specialist nurse (DSN) to enable them to self-manage their condition in order to reduce the risk of complications.
 

Doctoral Fellow Diabetes Nursing

The Foundation of European Nurses in Diabetes (FEND) Doctoral Fellowships have been created to give diabetes nurses the opportunity to undertake a PhD project that addresses an important clinical project relevant to the health and care needs of people with diabetes. The Fellows will work with the support of the current FEND Chair in Clinical Diabetes Nursing Professor Angus Forbes (who will supervise their PhD) and the wider diabetes research team at King's College London.

A training and development package will be provided to enable the post-holders to become a competent researcher. Applicants from across Europe are welcomed and while students will need to spend some time in London they will be able to conduct their study in their own country. The salary package offered includes a market supplement in addition to salary of £6,300 and the PhD Fees are also included. There are 2 Doctoral Fellowships available.
All applicants should be members of FEND.
 
This post will be offered on an a fixed-term contract for 3 years. This is a full-time - 100% full time equivalent.

Swedish Diabetes Specialist Nurse of the year 2012

Congratulations to FEND Executive committee member Marianne Lundberg. Marianne received an award of "Diabetes Specialist Nurse of the year 2012" from the Swedish association of Diabetes Specialist Nurses (SFSD).

EP votes in favour of Tonio Borg as EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy

The European Parliament has voted in favour of Tonio Borg’s appointment as Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy. The EP supported Dr Borg with 386 votes in favour, 281 against and 28 abstentions. Mr Borg comes from Malta.

The appointment should now be approved in Council in the coming days and he will then officially replace John Dallì as Commissioner.

Pioneering new diabetes partnership with FEND

On World Diabetes Day the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery has announced plans for a new clinical academic centre for diabetes nursing, in partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Foundation of European Nurses in Diabetes (FEND).  

The centre will develop and expand vital research into caring for and supporting people with diabetes, within a Europe-wide network, and is being established with significant funding from FEND.

Landmark EU Resolution on diabetes epidemic 14 March 2012

FEND applauds the commitment of the EU Parliament and the overwhelming support of MEPs to this landmark Resolution (B7 0147/2012). It supports the work of national patient organisations and professional societites in their advocacy for diabetes. This resolution will ensure through collaboration with key stakeholders will help arrest the tide and burden of the diabetes epidemic in Europe.

ECDA input to the EU reflection process on chronic disease

FEND is a founding member of the European Chronic Disease Alliance (ECDA). This collaboration of key chronic disease organisations has published a response to the Reflection Process on chronic diseases.

A New Research Report on Diabetes in 5 EU Member States

Researchers at the Medical Technology Research Group, LSE Health have published a new report on the costs, outcomes and management of diabetes in 5 EU countries. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with a high risk of developing complications and severe co-morbidities. Over the past few years, diabetes (Type 1 and 2) and its associated costs have risen, particularly those related to treatment of complications.
