UN Summit on NCDs (update)

The UN General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/65/238 decided that a high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases shall be held on 19 and 20 September 2011 in New York. The high level meeting shall address the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases worldwide, with a particular focus on developmental and other challenges and social and economic impacts, particularly for developing countries. It will include an opening and closing plenary, as well as three thematic round tables addressing the following topics:

Round table 1: The rising incidence, developmental and other challenges and the social and economic impact of non-communicable diseases and their risk factors;

Round table 2: Strengthening national capacities, as well as appropriate policies, to address prevention and control of non-communicable diseases;

Round table 3: Fostering international cooperation, as well as coordination, to address non-communicable diseases

The resolution also requests the President of the General Assembly to organize an informal interactive hearing with non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, the private sector and academia to provide an input to the preparatory process for the high-level meeting.

The President of the United Nations General Assembly has recently released information about the process for Civil Society participation in the above events.

Representatives from nongovernmental organizations, civil society organizations, the private sector and academia, including those organizations not accredited with the UN, who wish to attend the Informal Interactive Hearing on Non-communicable Diseases on 16 June 2011 and the subsequent High-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of Non-communicable Diseases on 19-20 Sept 2011, UNHQ, New York in New York, are invited to pre-register for these events.

FEND urges national diabetes nursing organisations to participate in one or both of these meetings in order to ensure that your pertinent contribution is recognised. FEND will ensure that it is represented at these significant meetings. To ensure a successful outcome FEND urges national diabetes organisations and other relevant alliances in the NCD field collaborate and lobby their Heads of government to be active participants at the UN high level meeting 19-20 Sept 2011.
