International Nurses Day

The 12 May marks International Nurses Day (IND) and the birthday of Florence Nightingale. This significant day will be celebrated by nurses throughout the world marking the contributions nurses make to society.

In UK, each year a service is held in Westminster Abbey in London. During the Service, a symbolic lamp is taken from the Nurses' Chapel in the Abbey and handed from one nurse to another, thence to the Dean, who places it on the High Altar. This signifies the passing of knowledge from one nurse to another.

FEND continues through its conferences and training programme to share knowledge and experience with all nurses. We wish you all a happy International Nurses Day as you mark the event in your own countries.

Perhaps the time has come to mark IND as a UN International Nurses Day.
