UN Summit on NCDs (update)

The UN General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/65/238 decided that a high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases shall be held on 19 and 20 September 2011 in New York. The high level meeting shall address the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases worldwide, with a particular focus on developmental and other challenges and social and economic impacts, particularly for developing countries. It will include an opening and closing plenary, as well as three thematic round tables addressing the following topics:

UN Summit on NCDs

On 13 May 2010, the General Assembly of the United Nations unanimously passed a Resolution (64/265) to hold a High-Level Summit on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in September 2011. The Resolution is the result of a campaign led by the NCD alliance, comprised of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union), the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), and the World Heart Federation (WHF).

ASCEND course

The European Academy of Nursing Sciences (EANS) is inviting applications to the ASCEND 2011 Summer School, 27 Jun - 8 Jul in Lund Sweden. This is aimed at nurses in the early stages of doctoral studies. Closing date is 28 February 2011.

WHO report on HBA1c for diagnosis

A new test for diagnosing diabetes mellitus has been accepted by a WHO-backed group of experts, offering a more practical approach to test for the disease that affects over 220 million people worldwide. A report on a WHO expert consultation issued today on the diagnosis of diabetes recommends the acceptability of glycated haemoglobin, or HbA1c, as an additional test to diagnose this debilitating and deadly disease.
